(Mechano)synthesis of azomethine- and terpyridine-linked diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymers

Three efficient synthetic approaches towards new azomethine- and terpyridine-containing 2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (diketopyrrolopyrrole, DPP) based polymers, such as P1 P2, are reported. The first approach involves the Pd-catalyzed synthesis via two- or three-component Suzuki Stille cross-coupling reaction in solution. second under ball-milling conditions. And, finally, third Pd-free condensation newly obtained polymers exhibited absorbance around 700 nm emission 900 nm, and, thus, these considered to be NIR-fluorophores.

Incorporating biphenyls as co-monomers in electron-deficient diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) conjugated polymers enables widening the optical band gap to 1.70 eV. Power conversion efficiencies of 3.7-5.7% and high open-circuit voltages of 0.80-0.93 V are obtained in solar cells based on these wide band gap DPP polymers.
